Portrait of Ralph Garret Voorhees (1838-1907) of Clinton, New Jersey. "Ralph Voorhees" written on verso in blue pen ink. Ralph married Elizabeth Nevius Rodman (1841-1924). Ralph G. Voorhees was the youngest of eleven children born in Mine Brook, Bernards Township, New Jersey on the Whiteaker estate that belonged to his mother's ancestors. The son of Garrett Voorhees (III) and Sarah Whitaker. Sarah was the only daughter of Nathaniel Whitaker and Hannah Drake. Elizabeth, his wife was born in Bedminster and the only child of John Rodman and Elizabeth Woodruff Nevius. For years Ralph ran his parents farm until an unknown condition caused him blindness. Due to his condition, the farm was purchased by a brother but he continued to live at the farm. Eventually, Ralph married Elizabeth after a 17 year engagement and shortly after moved into a house in Clinton on Main Street. Ralph's brother Nathaniel was already living in Clinton and Ralph wanted to be near him. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Voorhees independantly inherited considerable wealth wich they used for philenthrapic purposes of various churches in New Jersey, missionaries and schools in India, Colleges and Universityes like Huron College in South Dakota and Maryville College in Tennesse. These gifts untotaled but most likely hundreds of thousands. Including funding the creation of Denmark Industrial School for African Americans, now Voorhees University, in 1897, a private historically black university in Denmark, South Carolina, now affiliated with the Episcopal Church. Additionally, at Rutgers University is the Ralph Voorhees Library. Gift of the Allie McGaheran Estate, made possible by the DiRienz Family and the former Clinton Historical Society. |
